Independence Message: Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit

first_img 199 Views   no discussions Prime Minister Roosevelt SkerritThe following is a message from Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit on the occasion of Dominica’s 38th anniversary of Independence.“Prime Minister’s Independence MessageIt is now thirty-eight years since Dominica obtained political independence from Great Britain. As we look back over those years, evidence abounds that we have toiled, faced many challenges, overcome many obstacles and never given up our vision of a truly free people building a beautiful country that is unique and distinctly our own.Today, wherever you may be in the world, you can proudly say to yourself and to friends and associates, that you are Dominican, one of many strong and resilient people who time and time again, have shown the capacity to overcome adversity by transforming it to opportunity. The celebration of Independence triggers a homecoming of relatives and friends on a scale that is not seen anywhere else in the Caribbean. That homecoming, which has also attracted many visitors, is not only to reconnect with loved ones, but is akin to a pilgrimage intended to re-live and experience the very spirit and essence of what it means to be Dominican. The creole music, song, dance, cuisine and all the other cultural expressions which set us apart and define us as Dominicans, are all woven into what for all of us, is the celebration of Independence.I wish to extend to each of you, a warm and friendly welcome to Dominica. This is one of the happiest times on the calendar of events for which we are gaining an enviable reputation. I share the regret of those among you who, for various reasons, are not here to celebrate with us this year, as we showcase our rich culture and pageantry to the world. There is an all pervasive joy and excitement in the air as we celebrate under the theme “Strengthening Our Commitment to Nation Building.” This theme flows out of the challenge we now face in rebuilding our country following the widespread destruction and loss of life due to the devastating storm Erika in August last year.It is my dearest wish that the joy and excitement that is now widespread, will overflow into zeal for working together at the community and national levels on the many projects, to rebuild sections of our collapsed roads, our destroyed bridges and feeder roads, and to restore all our affected businesses to viability and profitability.I wish to single out an essential requirement for any desire to be responsive to our theme, whether you are a Dominican resident here or overseas. I speak to the important matter of first building positive relationships and to be more caring toward each other. It is so true that a house divided against itself cannot stand. So let us strive to set aside the negatives and through loving and caring, strengthen our relationships within our families. This attitude will infect our communities and spur us on to collective action for the benefit of Dominica. My friends! My entire family joins me in wishing you a happy and pleasantly memorable independence. The forces of law and order have done all that is possible to ensure your safety and security during this festive period. This does not mean you should let down your guard. Remember, the sun always rises in the morning, and so must you.We need you, with a strengthened commitment to build Dominica.May God bless you!HON. first_imgThe huge Basking Shark is usually found in Donegal waters in summer months. One of Donegal’s most unusual summer visitors has disappeared and left scientists baffled as to why.In recent years our waters have become a hotbed for giant Basking Sharks.Hundreds of the magnificent creatures are usually spotted swimming off our coast from Malin Head to Bundoran, with their huge mouths trawling for plankton. The docile creatures have become a favourite for maritime tourists. However there have been unusually few sightings of the creatures which grow up to an average of eight metres long (26ft).Even more worrying has been almost no sightings of the creatures in the normal hotspot around Malin Head up until last week.Scientists investigating the disappearance suspect the sharks may have by-passed Ireland and traveled to the waters off Scotland instead. They believe the sharks may have gorged themselves earlier in the year and traveled to Scotland instead.Emmett Johnston of the Basking Sharks Study Project, who is based in Inishowen, says unusual winds may have pushed the sharks further out to sea.He said “Preliminary investigations suggest that the sharks travelled from Irish waters to Scottish waters after gorging themselves off Slea Head and the Blaskets early in the year.“In previous seasons the sharks have passed close by Malin Head in mid May to early June but this year we believe that the sharks as a whole may have travelled further offshore than previous years because the Malin front was pushed further west than normal by unusually prevalent Northerly winds in the early summer.”A year on year tracking study currently being undertaken by Scottish Natural Heritage and the University of Exeter also suggest this may be the reason for the shark’s disappearance from Irish waters. Scientists are hoping the sharks will return to Irish waters before the end of the summer so they can continue their research about the mysterious creatures.“Our research teams are ready and waiting with lots of new initiatives aimed at discovering more about these iconic animals to further our campaign to gain protection for the species in Irish waters,” added shark expert Emmett.MYSTERY AS DONEGAL’S ICONIC BASKING SHARKS DISAPPEAR FROM OUR COAST was last modified: July 31st, 2014 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:Basking SharksdisapperancedonegalEmmett Johnstonlast_img read more

EditGrid – New Online Spreadsheet, Better Than Google Spreadsheets

first_imgWritten by Gang Lu and Richard MacManusEditGrid, the main product of HongKong-based companyTeam and Concepts (TnC) Ltd., is a leading Web 2.0 online spreadsheet service thatfocuses on online collaboration and interoperability. Having had 1 year of developmentand 9 months of public beta with 18 beta releases, yesterday EditGrid officiallyannounced its subscription service and removed the beta tag from its site. We spoke withTnC’s founder and Chairman, David Lee, a brilliant young man who was recently nominatedby BusinessWeek as one of Asia’sBest Entrepreneurs under 25. Also in this post we outline EditGrid’s main featuresand discuss why it’s better than Google Spreadsheets. The online spreadsheet market is crowded and the big players include Google Spreadsheets (as part of Google Docs &Spreadsheets), Zoho Sheet (as part of the ZohoOffice Suite — disclosure, Zoho is a R/WW sponsor), WikiCalc (a part of SocialText), ThinkFree Calc (as part of Thinkfree Office). ButEditGrid is the only standalone online spreadsheet offering.Features and comparison with Google SpreadsheetsEditGrid boasts real-time-update (RTU), allowing users to see changes immediately whensomeone is editing the same spreadsheet, and extensive collaboration features. It has afeature called Remote data, which fetches data from the web (e.g. stock information andforeign exchange data) and puts it into a spreadsheet. Also EditGrid has many morefunctions available than Google Spreadsheet – EditGrid has over 500 functions (like SUM() etc), whereas Google Spreadsheet has 230+; at least according to this EditGridcomparison of EditGrid to Goog Spreadsheets and MS Excel 2003.David Lee told us that although they are not the full solution to Web Office, in termsof offering a suite of products, they think that EditGrid is a better standalonespreadsheet product than its competition. However we think partnerships and integration into otherproducts is going to be key to their success. We were particularly impressed by the toolbox and charts (see the screenshot below). The document-sharing, live chats, etc., are also very impressive. There are really toomany features to list here, but check out the full product tour ifinterested. Also EditGrid’s development team maintains a very informative changelog and future plan. EditGrid intergrated into other productsWith its agile architecture that facilitates integration and embedding into enterpriseapplication platforms, strong data manipulation and distribution capabilities and highusability, EditGrid is ideal for integrating into existing platforms. Right now EditGridis integrated into start pages Netvibes, Pageflakes and Google Personalized Homepage. It is also integrated into SalesforceAppExchange and several SaaS products and platforms. [Ed: there is also going tobe announcement early next week of another Web Office vendor using EditGrid – stay tunedto R/WW for that news]Some other facts and figures… With its EditGrid Localization Project, EditGridhas been translated into 9 languages by its users. It has 15,000+registered personal users from 30+ countries, 200+trial organizations and 4,500+ trial organization users have created+23,000 spreadsheets.David Lee told us that personal users can still enjoy free service, but they have anew subscription service that allows organizations to utilize EditGrid – which has addedsecurity, administration and customization features. It is $5 per user per month, andacademic and non-profit organizations get a 50% discount.ConclusionIt’s great to see innovative Web Office technology coming out of Asia and taking onthe big guns in the US. EditGrid is indeed an excellent standalone product, in manyrespects better than Google Spreadsheets. If it successfully partners with existingplatforms (e.g. start pages and Salesforce), then it stands a good chance of competingwith the Office Suite offerings of Google, Zoho, ThinkFree et al. In a sense, EditGridtakes the ‘best-of-breed’ theory of Web apps even further – by creating a specialist WebOffice app that is best in class, but also requires partnerships with other vendors to betruly image to view full-size screenshot Related Posts gang lu 1 Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#Google#web#Web Office center_img 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic…last_img read more
